ModernWood Design GmbH & Co. KG
Berlin
About the company
Founded in 2009 by Lukas Weber, a design school graduate with a master craftsman qualification, ModernWood Design represents the new generation of German woodworking businesses. Weber started the company after working for established workshops and identifying a gap in the market for contemporary design combined with traditional quality. The business began in a small rented space and has grown steadily, converting to a GmbH & Co. KG (limited partnership with a limited liability company as general partner) in 2015 to attract investment while maintaining creative control.
Values
ModernWood Design stands for the fusion of innovation and craftsmanship. We balance digital precision with handcrafted details, creating furniture that's both contemporary and timeless. Sustainability is integral to our business model – we use responsibly sourced materials and design for longevity. For workplace safety, we've implemented comprehensive protocols with regular training sessions and clear standard operating procedures for all machinery. However, our fast-paced environment sometimes leads to corners being cut when deadlines loom, and we've had several near-misses that have prompted reviews of our practices. We recognize this as an ongoing challenge in balancing productivity with absolute safety.
Workshop
The ModernWood workshop occupies 650 square meters in a renovated industrial building in Berlin's Lichtenberg district. The space is divided between a high-tech machine room housing CNC equipment, an assembly area with multiple workstations, a dedicated finishing room with spray booth, and a design studio where clients can meet with the team. Digital fabrication technology is prominently featured, with a large-format CNC router as the centerpiece of operations. The facility features comprehensive dust collection, bright LED lighting, and clear organization with designated tool storage. Despite the modern appearance, several traditional workbenches are still in use for hand-detail work, creating an interesting juxtaposition of old and new methodologies.
