Baumpflege Schmidt e.K.
Cologne
About the company
Baumpflege Schmidt was established in 2004 by Klaus Schmidt, a former forestry worker who recognized the growing demand for specialized tree care in residential areas. The company is structured as an 'eingetragener Kaufmann' (registered merchant), making Schmidt personally liable for the business. Starting with just himself and one assistant, the company has gradually expanded to serve the Cologne area, maintaining a deliberately small size to ensure hands-on management and quality control.
Values
At Baumpflege Schmidt, we believe in honest work and straightforward dealing with customers. We focus on providing practical tree care solutions rather than unnecessary services, and we take pride in educating our clients about the needs of their trees. While we're committed to safety in principle, our approach is sometimes more relaxed than larger companies – experienced workers occasionally take calculated risks to get jobs done efficiently, though we always insist on basic protective equipment. Klaus frequently comments, 'I've been climbing trees for twenty years without incident; sometimes today's safety regulations go overboard.' We do provide helmets and cut-resistant pants, but enforcement is inconsistent, especially on smaller jobs. Our primary values center on craftsmanship, efficiency, and building a reputation for reliability rather than paperwork and formal protocols.
Workshop
Our workshop occupies a converted farm building on the outskirts of Cologne, providing approximately 200 square meters of covered workspace where vehicles and equipment are maintained and stored. The main area contains essential tool storage and maintenance facilities, with a small but well-organized repair bench where staff perform routine equipment servicing and chainsaw sharpening. One corner houses our climbing gear with dedicated hooks for harnesses and shelving for ropes, ensuring equipment is properly stored and easily inspected before use. The space is practical rather than fancy, with whiteboard scheduling and a small office area where Klaus handles paperwork and meets with clients. Behind the main building is a yard area used for wood processing and chip storage, with clearly marked walkways separating work zones from vehicle access paths.

Buying behavior
I look for the sweet spot between quality and price. The big brands are good but sometimes overpriced. We need reliable tools that can take daily abuse, but I won't pay extra just for a name. I tend to stick with what I know works for us rather than jumping at every new gadget.
