Martin Fischer
Martin trained and worked as a carpenter in the former East Germany, specializing in the restoration of historical buildings. After reunification, he worked throughout Germany on heritage projects before joining Holzbau Müller twelve years ago. His extensive knowledge of historical construction techniques has made him invaluable for the company's restoration projects.
Experience: Master craftsman with exceptional expertise in historical restoration (9/10)
Favorite Jobs
- Historical timber structure restoration
- Replication of period-accurate joinery
- Assessment of historical structures
When restoring a 300-year-old timber frame, you're in conversation with the master who built it centuries ago. I can look at tool marks and joint configurations to understand not just how they built, but why they made certain decisions, and this informs how we can respectfully preserve their work.
Physical Condition
Martin has significant joint degeneration in his knees from decades of kneeling on hard surfaces, and also experiences circulatory issues that cause his hands to become painfully cold in winter. Today he is very tired after a poor night's sleep and his right knee is particularly painful, making ladder work difficult.
Favorite Place
Martin is most at home in the company's small research library and documentation area, where historical building techniques are cataloged alongside samples of aged timbers and traditional fastening methods. He has contributed many books and photographs to this collection from his years of restoration work. The space serves as both a practical reference center and a quiet retreat where he can analyze findings from site visits and develop restoration strategies.
