Trees operate on a timescale beyond human perception. The decisions we make today will affect urban forests for centuries, which is why I believe so strongly in combining traditional knowledge with emerging science.

Physical Condition

Werner has accumulated the physical wear typical of a long career in arboriculture. Today his arthritic hands are particularly stiff, making writing difficult, though his knowledge and judgment remain as sharp as ever.

Favorite Place

Werner finds deep satisfaction in visiting trees he saved or planted early in his career that are now mature specimens. He maintains a personal map of significant projects and makes annual pilgrimages to check on their progress. His favorite is an avenue of rare cultivar linden trees he recommended for a historic estate in 1999 that have now formed a perfect archway. Watching these trees develop according to his vision over decades provides him with a profound sense of legacy.
