Baek Sung-ho
Baek worked in modern construction for twenty years before developing an interest in traditional methods. He joined Hana Traditional Woodworks during their expansion in the early 2000s. His experience in both worlds makes him invaluable for managing projects that combine traditional and contemporary elements.
Experience: Highly experienced with 35 years in construction (8/10)
Favorite Jobs
- Coordinating installation teams
- Quality control
- Client site meetings
Construction schedules have accelerated dramatically during my career, but traditional joinery can't be rushed. My challenge is helping clients understand that certain processes must take the time they take, just as they did centuries ago when these techniques were perfected.
Physical Condition
Baek maintains good strength but suffers from significant joint degeneration in both knees from decades of construction work. Today he is particularly affected by the damp weather, causing increased stiffness and pain while moving around the site.
Favorite Place
The site of a traditional hanok he helped restore in 2010 that now serves as a cultural center. He visits quarterly to inspect how the wooden elements are aging and adjusting. He takes satisfaction in seeing how the building has settled perfectly due to the traditional joinery techniques used, demonstrating to younger workers the long-term benefits of traditional methods over quick modern solutions.
