Favorite Jobs
- Traditional Korean joinery
- Training apprentices
- Hanok construction
The beauty of Korean joinery is that we can create structures that last centuries without a single nail. I dedicate myself to passing these techniques to the next generation because our cultural heritage deserves to be preserved through living practice, not just in museums.
Physical Condition
Experiencing mild arthritic pain in his fingers today, particularly in his dominant right hand from decades of fine handwork. His knees also show signs of joint degeneration from years of kneeling on job sites.
Favorite Place
Sung-jin's favorite place is Bulguksa Temple in his hometown of Gyeongju. The ancient wooden structures exemplify the pinnacle of traditional Korean carpentry that he aspires to in his own work. He visits at least twice a year to study the joinery techniques used by masters centuries ago and finds spiritual renewal in the peaceful atmosphere among the ancient timbers that have weathered countless seasons.
