Heo Jae-sung
Heo worked in South Korea's shipbuilding industry for 20 years before the sector declined. He retrained as a carpenter through a government program for displaced shipyard workers and joined Dongbu eight years ago. His background in large-scale industrial construction gave him valuable experience with reading complex blueprints and understanding structural loads.
Experience: Mid-career carpenter with strong technical background (6/10)
Favorite Jobs
- Multi-family housing framing
- Seismic retrofitting
- Structural problem-solving
The transition from shipbuilding to carpentry was natural for me - both require precision, structural understanding, and respect for safety. I bring a different perspective to framing problems from my years of working with steel.
Physical Condition
Heo suffers from early-stage osteoarthritis in his knees from decades of physical labor in shipbuilding and construction. Today he is experiencing moderate joint pain after kneeling frequently during yesterday's floor installation, and moves more deliberately between tasks than younger workers.
Favorite Place
Heo's favorite place is the Geoje Shipbuilding Marine Cultural Center overlooking the shipyards where he spent the first part of his career. He visits several times a year, watching massive vessels under construction while reflecting on how his life has changed. The center's wooden observation deck, ironically built by carpenters, reminds him of the connection between different construction trades and how his skills transferred from one industry to another.
